The party, unhindered by the attack of the overly-ego'ed Zaharan, continued their sweep of the dungeon. Continued exploration of the 7th level revealed 6 ghouls, easily dealt with, and a bone golem, only a momentary pause. Pilfering its magical swords, some treasure, and a scroll, the party continued its merry way. Soon, they found a scrawled map of the dungeon; following it, they quickly mapped the remaining rooms, and continued down the stairs. Unbeknownst to the party, however, they had released a group of five wraiths, which wandered along behind them. Let that be a lesson for you - never assume the floors above are truly empty. You never know when you've missed a secret room...
Vampire spawn |
Down to the eighth floor of the dungeon, the party encountered six strange creatures - vampire spawn! These creatures lacked the level-drain of their master, but could be deadly in large numbers. Only six meant they could be dispatched without incident, however. Next was a room full of undead wolves; Rhea was injured, but the wolves were driven back and destroyed. The very next room revealed four wraiths; the gang used the tried-and-true method of blocking the door with Protection from Evil, setting a trap, and dropping an earthquake over them. This was enough to destroy one of the creatures and damage another, but just as they were discussing what to do next, they were surprised by the other five wraiths! The party scrambled to move to face the new threat, collectively freaking out as they envisioned their levels dropping like stock in a burst bubble. They managed to coordinate their efforts, and dropped their protection just long enough to attack, bringing down one of the new wraiths. The other wraiths, seeing their path clear, moved across the earthquake and trap. Two more wraiths expired, but one managed to cross long. With the party hemmed in, Quetgar bravely leaped into the fray, breaking the protection but weakening the wraiths enough to seal their doom. Even as he heroically slashed through the wraiths, one reached out a bony hand and managed to wrap its fingers around his arm, draining a full level! The others quickly sprang to his aid, finishing off the final wraith.
Hoping to return Quetgar's lost level, the party left the dungeon with their treasure and returned to Wallace. Delayed by heavy snow, the party arrived Wintermas Eve; they barely had enough time to sell their treasure (including the expensive stuff they hadn't managed to sell earlier) and find an inn before the markets closed. Quetgar, meanwhile, was able to get his Wintermas miracle, and had his level restored, as well as half his XP towards the next level.
